He was a primal being made of fresh water and a lover to another primal deity, Tiamat, a creature of salt water.
Together, they had four children; Kingu, Mummu, Lahmu and Lahamu. The latter two had numerous descendants. Abzu complained to his wife that the younger deitied were disturbing his peace and slumber. So he along with Mummu sought to kill the younger deities.
However, when the younger gods found out about their plan he was placed in slumber then killed by the Enki who used his body to his desires, prompting revenge Tiamat and Kingu, themselves soon defeated by Marduk.
